Larsen Elementary recently held their annual Christmas Choir Concert of 2013. Students from both 5th and 6th grade performed favorites such as “Hot Cup of Cocoa,” “Holiday Blessings,” “Joy in Jerusalem,” and more for students and parents. They even played hand bells for a couple of the musical numbers. It was a great evening! These dedicated students have been practicing before and afterschool several times a week for the past several months and it definitely showed. This year the boys in the choir performed a special version of frosty the snowman. We absolutely love our Larsen choir and love to hear all of their hard work and dedication pay off. A big thank you to Mrs. Peery for helping out and our wonderful Mrs. Johnson. Way To Go Leopards!!
Last week our 5th grade students completed the 10 week DARE program and held their graduation on Friday December 6, 2013. Students successfully completed the requirements of D.A.R.E. and in order to receive their graduation certificates, students participated in class discussions and activities, learned songs, and wrote thoughtful essays on why it is important to stay away from drugs and other harmful substances. The vision of D.A.R.E. is to create, “A world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse, and other dangerous behaviors.” The D.A.R.E. program teaches students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and responsible lives. Additionally, it establishes positive relationships between students and law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community leaders. The students favored the audience with 3 awesome songs and several students from each of the 2 classes were chosen to read their essay. The 4 students who were chosen to read their essays were:
Mrs. Mantilla's Class - Kayden Cruz and Mandy Watson
Mr. Teuscher's Class - Isaac Wahinehookae and Ashley Hansen.
Also Jorge Ventura from Mr. Teuschers class and Claire Hulet from Mrs. Mantillas class won the "Daren" mascot lions! For participating in the D.A.R.E program our awesome 5th grade students also received a T-shirt that they can wear with Larsen pride! Our DARE officer, Officer DeWitt always makes D.A.R.E fun and we want to give a big Thank You to Officer DeWitt and all of parents for supporting our 5th grade students in this worthwhile program. WAY TO GO LEOPARDS!!

Fourth Graders were excited to have a real-life mountain man, Scott Sorenson visit us at Larsen recently. He kept us spell-bound as he told us tall tales as well as true stories about the adventures of real mountain men. We also loved the animal calls he did for us and were excited to learn that we can call a chipmunk by wetting our hand and kissing it. Believe me, we all had to try it. It was very exciting to see all of the furs of the many different animals he brought to show us. WAY TO GO LEOPARDS!!
Larsen Elementary recently had some very special visitors come to our school to help us honor Veteran's Day. We are so proud of all of our veterans and enjoyed having them come and talk to us this year. We watched a video presentation, and each one of the Veterans and our own Mr. Scoubes, introduced themselves and talked to the students and told us a little about where they have served. It was a very touching and moving assembly reminding us all of what these wonderful Veterans have sacrificed and done for us and our Country so that we can be free. At the end of the assembly we were privileged to have one of the Veterans play "Taps"! It was the great start to a very honorable day!
Mrs. Sorensen's class was issued the challenge of doing one Random Act of Kindness a day for fifteen days (making their goal 450 random acts of kindness). Some of their random acts of kindness included raking leaves for neighbors, cooking dinner for their family, cleaning sibling’s rooms, holding the door open for people, and starting a food/clothing drive for our school. As the acts of kindness came flooding in, it changed the atmosphere of the classroom and leaked over into our school. When they counted their final total, after the fifteen days, they had 481 Random Acts of Kindness, surpassing their original goal. They have also decided to keep going to see how many they can get by the end of the year. Join the fun, do a Random Act of Kindness today! WAY TO GO LEOPARDS!!

Larsen students recently got a little bit "smarter" than before. Last week students had a fun assembly where they were instructed by "Netsmartz" spokeperson Barbara Decker on computer and internet safety. Larsen students got to watch a fun video and learned about using the internet and what they are supposed to do or not to do about giving out information over the internet, cyber bullying, and websites not intended for our students. Thank you to NetSmartz for coming out and better educating our great students. Way To Go Leopards!
