Larsen Elementary held their annual Christmas Choir Concert on Dec. 2, 2010. Eighty students from 5th and 6th grade performed favorites such as “Hot Cup of Cocoa,” “Holiday Blessings,” “Joy in Jerusalem,” and more for students and parents. They even played hand bells for a couple musical numbers. It was a great evening! These dedicated students practice before and afterschool several times a week. The choir directors are Julie Peery and Dawn Graham.
On Friday November 19, 2010, Larsen Elementary 6th grade students blasted off to another planet as we visited the Clarke Planetarium in Salt Lake City. While at the planetarium we learned about the moon phases, the Earth’s orbit and the Sun. Students had a great time watching the presentations “Sky Watch I and II,” and after during the question and answer period we even learned something new. Thanks for the info “Rob!”
After exploring the Planetarium we walked down to the Gateway Mall where we enjoyed eating our sack lunches before orbiting back home where we landed safely back at Larsen Elementary. Way to go Leopards!
The fifth grade went to the Olympic Park in Park City. While there the students participated in five rotations that taught about the history of Park City and skiing, the differences between Park City in 1938 and now, and explored the museum. After the museum we got to go up the mountain and see the top of the ski jump as well as the bobsled run. We were lucky because the day we went was the first day of bobsled practice and we got to see two bobsled teams zooming by at 80 miles per hour! The two teams we saw on their practice run were from the Netherlands and Belgium. We also saw the USA women's bobsled team. It was a fantastic day!
Children at Larsen Elementary were more than just a little excited for the first snowfall of the year. Everyone was so happy and excited for the new winter wonderland so they could play in the snow that they decided to build snowmen during lunch recess. By the time the bell rang and lunch was over, we had 4-5 snowpeople join the playground that day.
Larsen Elementary celebrated Reflections with a showcase on October 28, 2010. Larsen PTA honored all of the participants with goody bags, a ribbon and an after school ice cream party. The following students were chosen as finalists to move on and receive the Merit of Excellence Award. Larsen Elementary recently held their annual Book Fair sponsored by the PTA. Students and teachers had the wonderful opportunity to preview and purchase books not only for themselves but for their classroom libraries as well.
Some of the students’ favorite books included: “Junie B. Jones”, "Diary of a Whimpy Kid", “Star Wars”, "Fancy Nancy", “Ramona The Pest”, and “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”.
We sincerely appreciate the parents support and all the hard work from the PTA and volunteers that made the Book Fair such a great success. Way to go Larsen!!!!
On a ghostly and ghastly Friday October 22 2010, Larsen Elementary held their annual Fall Halloween carnival. Teachers, spooks, students and their families enjoyed a
fun evening filled with lots of games, prizes, spook alleys, bouncey houses, a silent auction, yummy food and treats and a rock climbing wall.
A big thank you goes out to all of the parent helpers, teachers, staff and PTA for
a "spooktacular" evening. We would also like to thank all of those businesses, organizations and families that contributed to our silent auction.
The kindergarten students at Larsen Elementary invited special guests to school - their grandparents.
Grandparents from as far as Idaho and Lake Powell, as well as grandparents from just down the street came to school for a short program and to share a lunch with their favorite kindergarteners.
A very big thank you for all of our special visitors who came from near and far!
The last week of September Larsen Elementary held a great health and safety week. On walk to school day, the Maple Mountain High School Cross Country team came and helped encourage kids to use the cross walks and handed out granola bar snacks. During the week, the kids took part in our challenge to walk 5,000 laps as a school. Kids earned tickets for
walking, running, and jump roping laps during recesses. Our inital goal was 5,000 laps, but by the end of the challenge, we had 7,367 laps!! Our top ticket earners, Tiffany Nelson and Abigail Payne, both chose a soccer ball as their take-home prize. Our top classes, Mrs. Beckstead's, and Mrs. Taylor's class got first pick of the other prizes. Then, we put all the tickets together and drew names. Those kids whose names were picked got to choose a prize for their class. They choose between several types of sports equipment: bouncy balls, jump ropes, footballs, hoola hoops, basketballs, etc. It was a great week and a good reminder to be safe when coming to school and to make healthy choices. Way to go Leopards!!
On September 24, 2010, Larsen Elementary Kindergarten traveled down to Rowley’s South Ridge Farms in Santaquin or more widely known as the “Big Red Barn.” The kids were taken on a hayride out to the big orchards where each one of the students were able to pick and eat a yummy peach and apple. After picking and eating their fruit they rode out to the great pumpkin patch and picked a pumpkin to take back to their classrooms. It was a great beginning to the Fall season. Thank you South Ridge Farms.
