Inclement Weather Guidlines

Inclement Weather Guidelines

As cold weather arrives, has already arrived, I just want to make clear the inclement weather procedures for Larsen Elementary.  There are many elements to consider when deciding if students should stay in for recess or if they can be safe outside.  Listed below are just a few guidelines that we will follow.

  1. When the temperature is below 20 degrees, we will have recess inside the school.  This will also take into account the wind chill factor and precipitation that may have inside even though the temperature is above 20 degrees.

  2. Between 20-30 degrees students will have the option of staying in if they are ill and have a note from their parent indicating how long they would like them to stay in.

  3. The school building will be open at 8 am for students to come in and begin their day.  If your student needs to be dropped off before then we encourage you to have them get a note for the early morning 4-H class from Mrs. Eckhardt and register them to be able to come into Mr. Teuscher’s classroom before 8 am.  This allows the students access to warmth with the supervision of a teacher.

  4. We are sensitive to the air quality during the winter season and the stress this causes many students with asthma and other respiratory problems.  We follow the recommended guidelines given by the Utah Department of Air Quality.

  5. All of these procedures are monitored daily and just before students will be heading outside for recess to ensure the safety of each student.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the health and safety of your child please contact the school at 801-798-4035.  These guidelines will also be on our school website at

  6. When there is a severe storm or weather, here are the procedures for parents to know if there is school.  The district office will make a decision by 6:30 am and a parent link will be sent out to notify parents.  They will always have it listed on the district website as well.  You will be notified before school starts what the decision is.  Most likely it will be a delayed start to school and not a total cancellation.
